Oppikoppi Festival

This festival is among one of the best festivals in the world—fourth to be exact. Oppi has been around for 21 years and stems from the Afrikaans phase meaning “on the hill”. It is the biggest single event in South Africa, a fusion of both music and culture which embodies the diversity which the festival sprung from.
The National Arts Festival
Location: Grahamstown, Eastern Cape
Date: end of June to start of July
Damage: Mostly free but paid events start at R85
This is one of the continent’s biggest celebrations of the arts. The event caters for all artist endeavours—drama, dance, physical theatre, comedy, opera, music, jazz, visual art exhibitions, film, student theatre, street theatre, lectures, craft fairs, workshops, tours—you name it, the National Arts Festival has got it. What really makes this festival so unique is that there is no censorship of any form and the festival has become a platform for protest of social injustice and inequity.
