Delheim whips up flippin’ good pancake and wine pairings
At the legendary Delheim Estate, nestled on the idyllic slopes of the Simonsberg outside Stellenbosch, it is pancake weather all year round with the launch of their decadent sweet and savoury Pancake & Wine Pairings.
“At Delheim we don’t wait for the weather to turn grey and gloom before we whip out our pans for a pick-me-up pancake feast. Come rain or sunshine, here it is a ‘household staple’ which we salute every day and whilst it is not the easiest food to match with wine, particularly given the variety of pancake fillings, it is by no means an impossible job,” shares Delheim chef Yvette Horn.
Like pasta the best match for pancakes depends on the topping or filling and at Delheim one can delight in a delicious trio of taste sensations, whilst discovering an array of estate wines on offer at a mere R75 per person.
First up to tickle the taste buds is a whole wheat Salmon Pancake, filled with salmon trout and cream cheese and topped with caper berry shavings. This healthy indulgence is served with the Delheim Pinotage Rosé for a match made in heaven, as the delicate floral and berry notes of the wine pair well with this lighter style of pancake filling.
Next in line is the hearty Lamb Shank Pancake – a traditional pancake with Karoo lamb shank and homemade caramelised onion – which is just the ticket with the aromatic Delheim Cabernet Sauvignon. The black current, spice and dark chocolates flavours of the wine, work wonders with the meaty pancake mouthfuls, ending with a rich and lingering aftertaste.
Last but not least is an irresistible Pickled Pumpkin Pancake – crammed with Delheim’s own pickled pumpkin filling – which shares the spotlight with the estate’s eminent Edelspatz Nobel Late Harvest. Alluring with dried apricot, quince and cumquat notes, the luscious sweetness of this award-winning wine marries perfectly with the sugary acidity of the pancake.
The Delheim Pancake & Wine Pairings are on offer seven days a week at the tasting room – between 9h00 and 16h30. Pre-bookings are essential. To book for you and your friends contact the estate at Tel: 021 888 4600 or send an email to [email protected].
