Celebrating all things Portuguese & Mariner’s Mass
This year’s Portuguese Mariners Food, Wine & Family Festival takes place once again at Fazenda’s Mac Banana’s in Munster on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. Growing from strength to strength it is promising to be one of the absolute `must do’s’ on anyone’s event calendar this year.
The official celebration sees an opening dinner taking place on the 24th July 2015 and given the “Beach Shipwreck” theme, guests are expected to be wearing what they were when the ship went down. Just imagine the ball gowns and pajamas.
On Saturday 25th July the event really begins to rock – festivities roll on as the visitors descend on this much loved festival.
A traditional Portuguese central beer garden, big screens for sporting fixtures and the open fire food vendors, food markets, wine tastings, the ever popular Portuguese Buffet, an abundance of arts & crafts as well as the Portuguese Fresh Flower market, a kiddies play area and toddlers babysitting service, and top SA musicians will all be there on the day. Why stay at home?
Visitors are encouraged to participate in a truly memorable occasion – to attend the Mariners Mass on Sunday 26th July at 11h30 in the Portuguese Festival Chapel. After mass join in this auspicious occasion as the dignitaries visit the memorial site of the famous Sao Joao and lay a wreath in honor of those who lost their lives at sea. Keeping in theme with folk games the Portuguese will pit it out against the Boers and Souties in the village folk game with hay bale tossing, chili eating and tug of war as just some examples of the fun and challenges to be had! Anything goes… from dance shows to beauty and fashion shows! With such community appeal and seeing visitors travel each year to attend this festival, South Coast Tourism CEO Mr Justin Mackrory comments `We are incredibly proud our heritage on the South Coast – we live in such a rich multi-cultural demography that it only seems fit to support this festival, and when delving into our times gone by, any other province would be hard pressed to showcase such significant history.’
This festival is free of charge – come and celebrate life in the true Portuguese spirit.
On site existing attractions include The Butterfly Dome, Adventure Golf, Horse Riding, Trampolines, Petting Zoo, Bass Fishing, Quad Trails, Banana Farm Educational Tours.
