Khayelitsha, which means ‘New Home’, is the fourth site in Cape Town to play host to a giant yellow picture frame capturing the beauty of South Africa’s New7Wonder of Nature, Table Mountain, while creating a new attraction in the area.
The frame, the fourth in a series of temporary frames being introduced across the city, has been unveiled at Lookout Hill in Khayelitsha, providing a unique vantage point for residents and visitors to Khayelitsha to photograph themselves with the Table Mountain as a backdrop.
Constructed in 2004, Lookout Hill is a tourism facility that houses a function hall, restaurant, and arts and crafts stalls – attracting tourists by the busload. The frame is installed on the 164-step-high viewing deck, providing 360-degree views across the Cape Flats.
“We underestimate the fantastic view that Lookout Hill has”, says Sabine Lehmann, MD of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company. “On a clear day one can see Hangklip, False Bay, Cape Point, as well as all of the Cape Flats, and of course Table Mountain. We are very pleased that we have been able to erect this frame that not only celebrates Table Mountain, but also perhaps reminds us all, locals as much as international visitors, that Lookout Hill is worth a visit.”
The 2.8m tall by 4m wide frame was produced by South Africa artist Porky Hefer as part of the Table Mountain New 7 Wonder of Nature legacy project, and the interactive artwork is listed as an official World Design Capital 2014 project.
As with the other Table Mountain New 7 Wonder frames installed at the V&A Waterfront, Signal Hill and Eden on the Bay, visitors can share their photos on www.tablemountain.net.
“Lookout Hill is one of Cape Town’s hidden treasures in the heart of the community. The location provides an idyllic vantage point and spectacular views, and offers visitors a different visual perspective of the New7Wonder of Nature.
