Take one of the many hikes and marvel at the undulating landscapes formed by years of volcanic activity. Visit Piton de la Fournaise, Reunion Island’s famous active volcano. Visitors can even hike to its rim; a fascinating experience. Discover one of the many mountain bike trails and stop at some of the picturesque cascading waterfalls along the route. Try your hand at paragliding, SUPing (stand up paddleboarding), aqua hiking or visit giant lava tubes; huge tunnels made in the earth from previous lava flows.
Children will just love a whale and dolphin watching excursion (among other sea creatures such as sea turtles) at Bato Pèi. Aquarium de la Réunion is also a favourite with families, and it’s not difficult to understand why, as the aquarium is home to some 500 marine species including seahorses, lobsters and a wide variety of fish species.
The island is also home to fabulous hotels that cater for all tastes and budgets, most of which are family friendly and who’s staff love to welcome South Africans to their beautiful island. Depending on where you stay and the age of your children, some of the island’s accommodation establishments do not charge for children sharing with their parents in the same room and some offer great fun at their kids’ club facilities.
